At the moment we have 2 yards that are on 1 CPH number. They are about 7 miles apart. This makes life easy for moving stock from unit to unit, but can have its downsides, which I have just found out.
We are Tb free and have been able to move back to 12 month testing from 6 months. Locally to 1 of the units there has been a TB failure and so now we have to do a whole herd Contiguous test in the middle of summer!!
I do not know where the failure is, but as we are effectively 1 unit we have to test at both places. If we were separate we would only be doing half the farm as I doubt both places would be covered by the 3Km zone.
Having 2 CPHs would not be the end of the world but would ease our risk if we were to have TB, and would also dilute the Whole herd TB test. It would however be a pain in the arse for internal movements, but this could be got round by cutting the internal movements down, which is not too much of a problem. The main issue is our bulls and moving them twice a year to each place. We have a suckler herd with spring and autumn calving and so need the bulls to move and occasionally move the barren cows to give them another go, but maybe need to be harsher on them!
Does anyone have any advice on separating out the CPH number. It will be a pain, but I think it is the right thing to do for future disease preventing and control.
