Technically legal now if installed before 2005 (I think). But has to be replaced by 1st of January 2020, after that date it is no longer legal to discharge straight to a watercourses. These are un sewage treatment general binding rules.

Can a private house allow sewage to flow into a dyke near cattle grazing on the grounds its always done that.Land once belonged to house.

No.

Ask your local council's environmental health department to investigate; they have a statutory duty to do so. If the owner does not remediate they will serve a statutory notice on the owner.

I was an Environmental Health Officer in a former life so can answer this one definitivley!

hmmm, wonder how big the uptake was? Bet there are thousands of houses (including farmhouses) still discharging.

For the life of me I can't see why it is so expensive to sort. Plant is 3-4K yet the "professionals" are quoting anything from £12 to £16 K to install.......that's an effing expensive hole!!

ooh, can I pick your brains? Can I leave the old septic tank in situ to gather all the unmentionables, and install a secondary "installation" prior to discharge. I was thinking of some sort of filter, or a reed bed?

Even a 3-4K bill out of nowhere isn’t too funny for the likes of me. Where do I magic that up from?

I put in a treatment plant for my mum couple weeks back,6 person marsh tank around £1600,30metres of pipe, assorted fittings and couple manholes along with 10 ton pea shingle and 12 ton topsoil to put right garden, another £1000.my labour and digger was free but should have been around £750 and a friend helped me.paid him £200.luckily I can dispose of trench and hole material and had crushed concrete to reinstate yard.woukd easily done job for around £7000 including carting material away.forgot to ad sparky and armoured cable aswell.people are generally quoting £12/16k to do these.can see things adding up if site is small and you have to get things as needed and waiting for grab lorries too.luckily I had everything here before I started.firgot to ad my dumper too so another £100.can soon add up.reckon I’ve done around 150 of these in the last 30 years.

Done our own pretty much the same way as you, under £2000.

I have two to do this summer - farmhouse and cottage - do we need to inform building control? If I just go ahead and do it, are there likely to be any consequences? (Not planning to sell in the forseeable)

Any suggestions as to best type to install?
