last year my portfolio returned 25%, the ftse100 18%, sack your fund managers,

Your % gains average out the same as mine on an annual basis. I'm happy as I am.

Full time pro dealers, with vast experience and no farm to distract them from the screens in front of them, and very often with additional information not available to Joe Bloggs, don’t have the success rate, amateurs boast about on online forums or down the local.
For once we agree. A few lucky wins and it's all good. About 70-80% of traders lose money but what they don't tell you is that those people lose a hell of a lot more money than the winners win.

It is possible but needs to be a career, not a sideline and there is a huge amount of psychology to understand.

Yes i totally agree with that statement....I have been there.....the main problem is that folks just cant stand looking at a paper loss and thats all it is unless you sell, many will tell you...myself included that the moment you sell, or shortly afterwards things normally reverse, the main thing to ask yourself is why did i invest and has anything changed...if not you just ride out the storm, its a lesson i have learnt over the years. Most...not all will return you to profit over time

Historically, wars have been good for financial markets. Markets are already recovering on the back of the mild sanctions imposed so far.

Buy the confusion. RR and SSE have made me a nice profit over the past 48hrs. BARC and LLOY swinging the pendulum slightly back to the middle though.

I'm looking to set up a new S&S ISA platform. Any recommendations? I have a couple of ISAs with Vanguard which have done quite well, but I'm quite keen to self invest a little. AJ Bell seems to be reasonably priced versus its rivals, is the platform reasonably straight forward?

Timely as I set one up last night with HL after consulting a mate who is into self investing. Really easy to do, and fees shouldn't be too bad as I have picked an 'ETF' so capped at £45 a year I think, same as it would be for shares.

iWeb. Part of Lloyds group so hopefully sound enough. Trades are £5 and no monthly/quarterly charges. I’ve been with several brokers over the years (inc Interactive Investor for some of my older ISA investments currently), I wouldn’t go past iWeb. Simple and cheap, what’s not to like?

I'm with A J Bell no idea what I'm doing but have found them very easy to use and understand with good support when needed.

I have a bit in a Fidelity ISA and some in Hargreaves Lansdowne.

Originally the fidelity was with Cavendish, but fidelity bought Cavendish out. At the time it was the cheapest multi-fund provider out there. As we know, ongoing cost is inimical to the miracle of compounding, so that was my overriding consideration. This is where all my 'investments' go. I'm 37, so it's exclusively equities via passively managed index tracking funds.

I put some money into the HL ISA in order to speculate on the price of oil. HL had some products that were not available via fidelity. Speculation on oil was going ok, until 21 Feb this year, when I took a punt that the Ukraine thing was just about to cool off, so sold the lot.🤦‍♂️

Of the two platforms, Fidelity is more user friendly, and still cheaper in terms of ongoing charge for the ISA wrapper.
