Mix your own... ye wont regret it (y)

I would. I only feed my pedigree Charollais ewes, and my knees would be shattered by now if I had to fight them through troughs.
Last time I worked it out, to make the same spec of ration up, I might save £30/t, as long as I didn’t value the time of mixing/feeding/buying some troughs.
On the quantity I use, I think i’ll Forgo that for simplicity, time saving and my health.;)

Each to their own though.

I wont disagree with your points.... you will know the job better ....

the thing I like about home mix, Is knowing the quality of ingredients...

I will always use my best barley, beet pulp or oats.. hy-pro soya, minerals and a little molasess to bind the said mix...

wee bit of a faff about I agree.. but by god they milk and do well..

saving of between 30-50 quid /ton depending on how you cost your gear!

someone will no doubt be along soon to rip it up!

edit : It works for me (y)

I’m not sure if you’d think the same if you had a hundred 100kg ewes running at you like a stampede. I only get through about 12t a year in total, so I’ll stand that.
Take your point, but we've done it for years so our system (if you can call it that:D) has evolved to suit.

I'm buying the straights (beet pulp and NB Maize grains) and bruised Barley pre-mixed from the mill... it's mixed to my spec. All I'm doing is putting my molasses on it (they would put basic on, but don't have the stuff I use) which takes 5mins once a week with the telehandler.

I feed it through the snacker - don't understand this home mix must be fed in troughs rubbish??

(Collected) It's around £193, all in.

I have never dealt with the National compounders, with every load being different ingredients, well not since we came unstuck with it 30 odd years ago. I will only ever deal with a compounder that will guarantee a fixed formulation and whose ingredients list I don’t dislike. The above ration ticks that box for me and the ewes certainly milk on it, when the diet is somewhere near balanced obviously.

Absolutely agree about having a system that works for you. If I had walk through feeders or something similar, i wouldn’t be averse to mixing my own, but as it is, I can chuck buckets of rolls out on the bedding from a raised central cattle manger very easily.
Over time, most of our systems adapt to fit with how we want to do things, and rightly so.(y)
