Sheep feed barrier dimensions

Hello all,

I am making some horizontal railed sheep feed barriers out of old cubicle head rails, and I was wondering what size of space to make for the ewes to eat through? It’s for hill Cheviot ewes.
I reckon I have the height of the boards for them to eat over correct, but unsure about how wide a gap to make between that and the rail above.
