Nearly full time top. Iv been putting in 5 litres. Run them through and let them stand on stone lane for half hour after. Hasn’t been helping them at all. Checked feet and it’s just scald that’s the issue is but isn’t helping oddly

Can you turn them round and run them through it straight through it again? I always found that seemed to get on top of it better, but always at 4-5%.

What strength formalin are you using there are two strengths we use the strongest so your initial question hence answer has a bearing depending on strength used

Formalin is dangerous and an astringent?. It is also carcinogenic.

A quick run through won't do any harm, but a long stand in Zinc Sulphate is both kinder and far more effective. In fact, one )or preferably two) stand in footbaths is the best investment a sheep farmer can make. And after two years of intensive use as required, it becomes needed less and less often.

problem you get with formalin once scald gets past a certain point it will seal it in the foot making it worse (foot will swell up) worse if its to strong , i mainly use zinc sulphate (golden hoof) with a washing machine tablet or fairy liquid to break surface tension of water , but do it a few times over a couple of days , still use formalin for young lambs first sign of limping in spring , but only at 4% no higher

Can’t remember what strength it is. Way I have my footbath is to side if the race with hurdles along it. Couldn’t hold them in it so always walked through footbath. Had bag of golden hoof in past to somewhere but was told it’s crap and to use formulin so changed to it

Get an empty formalin can (25litre) and put 1250ml in it and fill with water that’s a 20:1 ratio. Pour that mixed solution into the footbath until it’s 1-1.5” (25-40cm) high in the Bath. Go any deeper and you’ll cause Problems to the legs/hooves in the long run.
I have a few cans mixed up ready so I can top up my 35’ footbath or if I need some on a small footbath or mats I have ready mixed to go. If you have bad feet do 20:1 plus a kn0bfull. Run through twice 15 minutes apart if bad.

Yes . i agree.

heres a good foot bath (stand in) design that can be made fairly easily, this wa s done by a clever practical chap its all here on the forum somewhere given a chance...see here first picture from @Thesheepdipperman
And to go one step furthe and build another one the same size next to that one would be ideal but with just water in , to wet and clean a bit/prepare their feet for the main one, then they are moved into the zinc suplahte one.
get abatchsystem going then all it needs is a bit of timekeeping and patience.
works well.ime

interesting thing that ian mitchel innes was saying about the PH being too alkaline will cause foot problems.. anyone have any thoughts?
weve not footbathed here in years but i think im going to have to resurect it as i can only hooftrim so much. i feel we should have the need to do it but am finding the longer grass maybe isnt suiting the genetics that i have atm.

It’s the long stemy grass that’s causing issues with mine. Hopefully better control over it next year
