Hi, I have a small holding in North Wales and I’m looking to get into sheep scanning but not sure where to start! Are there any sheep scanners on here that can give me a bit of advice please? Thank you

A friend of mine set up doing it a few years ago. The scanner manufacturers organise training I believe, whilst taking a big pile of your money to buy the equipments. Budget 10k for the basic kit, you’ll probably need a spare hand piece too, as you can’t just leave a job if one packs up, and a very expensive insurance package/repairs bills for them. He built his own crate, and has built a few for others now (about £1100 iirc).

You need to do a decent number before you are fast enough, and accurate enough, to charge anyone money for it, and some people never do ‘get it’ ime. It’s very difficult to build a decent round up, as nobody changes scanner if they’re happy. If you can find someone that is looking to scale back or retire in a few years, then it could be handy, but an big established round could be earning £40-50k, so none of those guys are in a hurry to pack up.;)

There are always lots of people with small flocks that are wanting a scanner on Faceache, which could make a ready source of customers. Whether those people would pay the higher prices needed to cover your travel & setup costs for 30 ewes though, and I suspect might be less loyal than farmers with bigger flocks? They would be happier for you to take your time while you’re learning though.

Good luck, but do go into it with your eyes open. It isn’t a very good earner overnight.

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I have heard this a few times. £10k is a lot of money!!! ? But I suppose you have to start somewhere. Thanks again
