Sheep Scanning

Kind of meant the swale carrying the lambs.
The swale probably spends a lot of time in the lowlands during winter as a young sheep nowadays before we buy them as 2 and 3 crops
, ewes have been removed from the fells havnt they.
We put some tremendous big swale ewes through the scanning crate, i said to the scanning lad 'these are off helvellyn '.... he said , 'they might have loooked at helvellyn '😂

Where do you buy your ewes?

Suppose any fell ewes are also a lot lower stocked than they once were as well.

Twenty years ago they used to be eaten into the wick, bare as a concrete yard....now they have 3 or 4 inch off rough grass on them.
Ive often had a walk up these fells and hills these last few years, more grass on them than the inbye land now, sheep are few and far between.
Just the type of land we are short of for fothering on in these wet winters.

Exactly that’s what my dad always says, nice dry going with no water under your feet

Scanned our Charollais ewes this morning, and just crunched the numbers.

18 empty!
40 singles
65 doubles
12 triplets
153%

40 pedigree ewe lambs too (including a few that I wasn't sure where marked):

10 empty
17 singles
13 doubles
108%

22 Highlander ET recipients running with them:

all in lamb (inc 4 returns), and 80% conception rate to implanted embryos (mostly frozen).

Too many empty ewes (a few of which were given another chance last year  ), but always get a lot more in the pedigree ewes for some reason. Ewes in far better condition than last year, despite looking equally miserable on muddy beet fields. Hopefully on top of heamonchus and various trace element problems that have done for them in recent years.
Scanning %age (inc barrens) 20% up on last year's disaster anyway.
