anyone any experience of timber sheep slats. not the mesh ones
We have some, they work great, made them ourselves in 8’ x 4’ sections on three lengths of 2” x 4” pine with slats across made out 2” x 1” slats across it. Hard to explain but the slats are cut on an angle so the top is wider than the bottom and therefore the muck drops through easier.

Had them years ago made from 2×1 larch. great when new but when they became worn legs started to slip through which could result in a broken leg [emoji22]
Great for feet and savings on straw. Too cold for a weak lamb and could be slippery. Gone back to straw now. I would suggest plastic slats would be a better idea long term but I have no experience with them.

slatted sheep house up on the moor had wooden slats till wornout, the gap was critical, much wider than you would think. Also needed to adjust feed to get dung right to
to tread through slats
The wood got changed for plastic. as above, cut at an angle
Runs about 8 ft wide, was also great for housing pre shearing

what gap have you between the slat?, I'm in the process of making some with angled slat as described, using a 2"x 1 1/2" just not sure how wide to leave them so lamb foot doesn't fit through

We only used them for fattening hoggs so had them at about half inch gap Or the width of my fingers. They do wear after a few years so was not keen on making it much wider, got to have plenty of stock in to keep them clean and dry, if they get wet it’s like a skating rink

Think the length of gap on mesh is maybe inch long. By half inch. Never really measured it. Very thin mesh tho so much falls through all time

never seen sheep slats.... any pics?? who supplies them??

wet winters!!!! its an option to look at...
Most folk round here have got second hand plastic ones out of ex pig feeding places or splashed out on new ones. The wood ones were all the fashion thirty years ago, the ones we made were from our own timber and sliced up at the local mill so we’re cheap if you didn’t count the labour. But I never did reckon much to telly much rather listen to the radio while doing something useful of an evening.
Got a mate with a shed specially designed for feeding hoggs, his slats are expanded metal and he only feeds a high fibre concentrate. Shears then as they go in and puts 500 a month through and reckons he will clear at least a tenner a hogg over all costs. He will buy a lot out of the fat ring that sent just right and turn them round in a few weeks and they will gain over a kilo a week. He’s been doing it a hell of a lot of years and so knows what he’s doing or he wouldn’t still be going
