At least 8 weeks notice in Sussex. Don't sit on it like I did....... got 14 guns in storage costing a ruddy fortune.
Application had to be back 8 weeks before old licence due to expire or they wouldn’t grant temporary ones.Had a reminder for my shot gun certificate a couple of years ago but they did not remind me last year for firearms certificate. Had an email from them the day after my FAC expired asking if I still had the rifle. Upshot was I had to put the rifle in storage and my application was not treated as a renewal but as a grant and therefore cost more. No comment.

Forgot to renew mine and the police rang up,not very happy. They suggested I "Loaned" them to my neighbour.

They usually send them out LATE , if ever as blame post etc,then stipulate deadlines and if your in breach of law.
Doctors need/take 12 weeks so your on the back foot to start with.

Last year Devon & Cornwall sent me a reminder eight weeks before a shotgun expiry was due. I was already right on it, but the renewal certificate took over eight months to arrive with two temporary extensions.
These included a visit from two firearms specialists who apologised for their administrative delays. You need to be very proactive these days.

Yes you get a reminder , i dont think they are trying to catch people out and IMO if you own firearms you should be bright enough to remember to renew it without the state helping you.

Be careful though as humberside only granted temps if you got the renewal in like 6 - 8 weeks before due date. After that it was tough and you had to put guns in storage as they wouldn’t grant temps after that

My doctors said it could take up to 4 weeks but I had it back in 1 week. Fired it all off to NYP and my certificates came back a week later

Mine expires at the end of this month. Had my reminder about 12 weeks ago from Dyfed-Powys. Application returned with doctors letter within a week. So far nothing heard from them. Email sent last week asking if they can give me a temporay extension, no response, similar on line request made today. Still nothing.
But they want you to be legally licensed and help them out when needed!

Online system in Lincs reminder 3 to 4 months before
have to get doctors cert before filling in online a lot quicker than before when a paper application
if you have a gun licence/fac then get on to them in good time 12 weeks before expiry
make life a lot easier they can then give you a legally temporary extension

Never got mine, made the mistake of asking nicely why, got a very short reply of, it's not their responsibility, we as responsible holders should always know, which is fair enough but still frustrating, I noticed with 6 weeks left, she said look to sort my guns out because I'd not get anything with that time left, got my doctors note back days before my expiry, early February, and sent my application online that day, still waiting.....
