Show me your rear end!

Now that I have your attention..

One of my farmers is having problems with his back gates on the parlour. At the minute it is just a bar with a counter weight but the bar is bent, set too high and too many cows either wiggle in or wiggle out. It's a real pain in the arse.

As the fitter has made such a hash of fitting it in the first place it will almost be a case of rip it out and start again.

So what has anyone else got? Let me see your rear!

Vacuum operated gates that rotate around the last cow in the row. They’re alright, but not heavily enough built (Delaval), had to beef up one rail that the ram is attached to. Used to have the counterbalanced bar in our old parlour, shocking!

Wesfalia rear gates from about 2002 are the best, bomb proof and work day in day out.

Have a bar that sits and locks onto the neckrail for the last side, clever design as the cow pushing onto it means it locks even harder.

Mine are counter wieghted, drop and swival type, pull the rope to lower it and slide it forward to latch, it then sits level on top of the rump rail, somewhere around 40inches, no backing out but had the odd little un scrat her way under it and fetch it off it's pivot 🙈

this is our rear end in our 20/40 westfalia parlour. Nobody ever gets through these buggers. Although being jerseys, they always try, hence the extra bit of wood. A person can still squeeze through the gap, which is handy

We've got them at home, my only gripe is when the parlour is turned off the air leaks back and cows left in the collecting yard can push through. Is that the same for you? Or have I a leak somewhere?

Either the air valve needs turning through 90 degrees, or the locking mechanism needs adjusting

Don’t think we’ve ever had animals in the collection yard without the vacuum on. But the gates are designed to lock shut, and cannot be pushed either way unless you put your arm through and unlock it
