Every few years I feel tight and buy a load coz it’s less money. After pulling apart every wedge so it’s not like bedding on lumps of wood I remember why I don’t buy this sort of straw!! 😂😂
If its like lumps of wood its because it was damp baled, nothing to do with being outside.
We used the last of our 95 straw in 2001, all stored outside in rows, it was beautiful golden stuff

People put in wood chip corals round here......don't see them being used anymore
they were all the rage once, we even thought about putting one in, but we had the sheds, then went back into dairy....but quite true, you don't hear of them now. You can't really beat good cattle, on a clean straw bed, to look at, then look at some outwintered on kale !

No but better than paying over £200 for sun dried straw
And you ain't got an angle on this one , a man selling straw coming up with ideas on not using it [emoji19] [emoji23]
If it was not dry wouldn't it heat ?
would it be ok if put enough in for them to lye on, left them to it for a few days/week/whatever and then scraped the whole lot out again and not let it build up ?
anyone had any experience of using it for bedding like that ?

Yes, we use lots of it. It doesn’t heat up much if less than 18 inch deep. We put it a good foot deep in the sheds then bed straw on top. All the moisture runs through. You have too clean out more often as it builds up faster than straw muck. But if you are savvy with the loader you can scrape the top couple of inches of chip off along with the muck and leave a one dry bed too start again with
