You are clutching at staws now (literally) its August now its all over way to late for straw, forget it.Hardly any straw down in the Midlands Through Herefordshire , Winter Barley seems done what there was off it and mosts seems to have gone on lorries :hell of a lot moved last week ,
As I've never been short of straw I can only assume that my regular suppliers are in a better state than last year , not spoken to them though , but at this moment there is the potential for a tsunami of straw if the weather come half decentYou are clutching at staws now (literally) its August now its all over way to late for straw, forget it.
Some of the crops I've been through recently are huge and still standing up. A lot of work will be achieved in 10 days of sunny weather ....when it comesAs I've never been short of straw I can only assume that my regular suppliers are in a better state than last year , not spoken to them though , but at this moment there is the potential for a tsunami of straw if the weather come half decent
Just shows how unpredictable it has become , swings and roundaboutsThis thread never disappoints.
As someone who relies on contractors, I don't like to see work backing up. We have the same " It's still only July " quotes every year. Then it's " It's still only mid August "..........Just shows how unpredictable it has become , swings and roundabouts
BREAKING NEWS !!!!!
It's August... harvest is now officially late . Straw crops ruined ! Arable farmers in Tears
Livestock men suicidal ...worrying where their straw is coming from ........
...and suddenly a heatwave appears
A post I could have written myself, although I will start loading at £75./ ton. Most I sell too have asked for two more loads than normal "you know, too store for next year" so there's not going to be much I can chop this season. I will happily chop if cutting in the dark with heavy rain on the forecast before daylight, even in a big livestock area.I can see the job from both sides, having livestock and straw for sale (in a good year) .I will not sell straw for less than £100/t loaded on your trailer, there is too much work and cost in the job these days, any less and I will store it until it is wanted. It certainly is not a by product!
I think perhaps you need to stop thinking of it as a waste produce , the market is massiveAs someone who relies on contractors, I don't like to see work backing up. We have the same " It's still only July " quotes every year. Then it's " It's still only mid August "..........
The last storm flattened some of mine. I don't want anymore wet weather at all.
Some on here seem to think straw ( sorry, I meant waste product ) is made in a factory outside Milton Keynes.
The bedding I’m now using IS made in a factory and the amount of money it is saving me per week means I certainly won’t be begging cap in hand to arable farmers for straw at any priceAs someone who relies on contractors, I don't like to see work backing up. In catchy weather or rather rain delayed harvest it will most likely be fit to bale behind the combine and a baler is faster than a combine in the main [I caught up 4 one day, one twice] so if you haven't got the capacity to get it baled and shifted then get that sorted outTrouble is down here one cheap load delivered on a lorry becomes “the price”
Last year those that had it off the field had a bargain. They were regulars and we stood by them. Considering how prices moved they had a hell of a deal. Want £5/t more than last year now and it’s the end of the world.
Most livestock guys haven’t a clue about the “true” cost of straw. Even at SW prices it’s a pretty close thing whether it’s worth baling it, especially with our catchy weather.
Can't you find an old Ford combineAs someone who relies on contractors, I don't like to see work backing up. We have the same " It's still only July " quotes every year. Then it's " It's still only mid August "..........

yep best waymy loyal gang of suppliers kept me going last winter and I refuse to try and beg it of them when there is a supposed glutt ,
Anyone turning , baling , stacking and loading straw ex field for less than £25 a ton is loosing money .I think perhaps you need to stop thinking of it as a waste produce , the market is massive
I'm in the same boat with my horse haylage , still got a fair bit to do
As for straw , any man and his dog can get in a wagon go and beg a load of straw for nothing and undercut the market , while the rest of us are left to pick up the pieces in a year when straw is short , my loyal gang of suppliers kept me going last winter and I refuse to try and beg it of them when there is a supposed glutt ,
How have you got on telling your grain merchant they have to increase the price or you will chop in ?This thread never disappoints.
