I think growth stage was the issue. He’s for trying again this year but cut earlier and then leave for the fallow periodSurprised by that, if it’s cut young like normal grass leys it makes great feed

I hope that DM isn’t right. Wouldn’t want to be going to the pub after being near that stuff if it isJust leave this here View attachment 1162984
Do them no good at all, as fast as it goes in one end they’d be spraying it out the otherI hope that DM isn’t right. Wouldn’t want to be going to the pub after being near that stuff if it is
It was cut in early occtober in the rain ,I wasamaized with the quality given how wet it wasI hope that DM isn’t right. Wouldn’t want to be going to the pub after being near that stuff if it is
back in the 70's, all that effluent, best forgotten. It was cut in early occtober in the rain ,I wasamaized with the quality given how wet it was
But it's no wetter that we used to direct cut grass in the 70ts
I think his was gs4 herbal lay so has to have 5 weeks rest between 1,may and 31 July and the quality was gone.that's simply bad management, cut at the correct stage, its a very good quality feed.
a load of past/dead stalks is rubbish.
So cut it in May then give it minimum 5 weeks rest before cutting again?I think his was gs4 herbal lay so has to have 5 weeks rest between 1,may and 31 July and the quality was gone.
I was led to believe that's what he'd done, but only "hearsay " from someone who looked at the bales. So cut it in May then give it minimum 5 weeks rest before cutting again?
I intend grazing hard, shutting up 20th June & round baling for haylage late July.So cut it in May then give it minimum 5 weeks rest before cutting again?
we are finding soil condition behind the herbal leys is improved. But sensible plan, to max quality production from them. Just needs a different mindset.I intend grazing hard, shutting up 20th June & round baling for haylage late July.
So really used for grazing apart from 5 weeks, that haylage seen as a byproduct, hopefully fed to ewes at lambing time, In a dry time 5 weeks won't produce much anyway.
The spring grass good for ewes rearing lambs, the aftermath for lamb fattening.
When ploughed up, should be good for wheat drilling, better still go stubble turnips, grazed early & then wheat.
Growing normal grass for hay sales.
we made some hay, from a r/clover based ley, 3rd cut, dried right out, and rather weedy, came in at 1.25 square bales/acre.I think his was gs4 herbal lay so has to have 5 weeks rest between 1,may and 31 July and the quality was gone.
I suspect these herbal silages may be OK if chopped and put in a pit, especially if mixed a bit with normal grass, but not work so well in bales.I think growth stage was the issue. He’s for trying again this year but cut earlier and then leave for the fallow period
Plenty of wheat aboutis there a general shortage of wheat straw ? Plenty of barley, but our supplier hasn't got any wheat.
on the herbal leys, if cut at correct stage, shouldn't be any problem wrapping it.
but could be a serious problem, if you tried haying it.
