It was cut in early occtober in the rain ,I wasamaized with the quality given how wet it was
But it's no wetter that we used to direct cut grass in the 70ts
back in the 70's, all that effluent, best forgotten.

few years ago, we used a new enzyme silage additive. Ended up with the highest protein silage, in our group, 17%, also ended up with the lowest DM, 19%

grass was well wilted, no effluent came from the pit, and when we added 2nd cut on top, the silage never moved, or wheels sunk into it. Caused some head scratching, from maker, and feed rep, but the cows liked it.

the best explanation we received, was the enzyme had 'attacked' the stem/leaf's, from the inside, and broke them down, but left outside whole. 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

never had silage stay stable, when you could wring the water out, with your hands, Went back to using 'normal' additives since.

So cut it in May then give it minimum 5 weeks rest before cutting again?
I intend grazing hard, shutting up 20th June & round baling for haylage late July.

So really used for grazing apart from 5 weeks, that haylage seen as a byproduct, hopefully fed to ewes at lambing time, In a dry time 5 weeks won't produce much anyway.

The spring grass good for ewes rearing lambs, the aftermath for lamb fattening.

When ploughed up, should be good for wheat drilling, better still go stubble turnips, grazed early & then wheat.

Growing normal grass for hay sales.

we are finding soil condition behind the herbal leys is improved. But sensible plan, to max quality production from them. Just needs a different mindset.

I think his was gs4 herbal lay so has to have 5 weeks rest between 1,may and 31 July and the quality was gone.
we made some hay, from a r/clover based ley, 3rd cut, dried right out, and rather weedy, came in at 1.25 square bales/acre.

basically we just topped it off, and it was just bundles of stalks. As soon as moisture allowed, dd w/wolds in. And had 2 cuts before maize.

interesting fact, cows cleared that rubbish hay, and it was rubbish in our opinion, cows disagreed.

is there a general shortage of wheat straw ? Plenty of barley, but our supplier hasn't got any wheat.

on the herbal leys, if cut at correct stage, shouldn't be any problem wrapping it.

but could be a serious problem, if you tried haying it.

We only have about 250 loads of wheat left now and 80-90 loads of barley which is about 10-12 weeks at the current rate with 22 weeks till harvest hoping for some decent weather this spring 🤞
