Silage wagon

We have been wondering about doing something similar. Our contractor charges £56/acre for complete job plus diesel which worked out about £8/acre this year. Would still get him to mow and row. We clamp 150acres and bale another 40. Could we get more into the clamps as they would be filled over 3/4 days (instead of 3/4 hours) or would the longer chop length of the wagon mean less in the silo?

Get a good chopping wagon and cut fairly young, and you'll put a lot in it. It's all the better though if you can reopen the pit and go over the top with another batch when it has had time to settle.

Sounds like it could work
We bought a second hand wagon this year and it's uses a fraction of the diesel, we work together with two neighbours, one neighbour we spread his slurry with umbilical and he pays it back with wagon work
The other is either slurry work or wagon work which is returned in wagon work so no one has any big cheques to write out just a small balance between either way.

At 100 euro:eek: contractor rates it's a very very good option. Almost a no brainer.

Getting someone to do all the other work for use of the wagon on is a masterstroke(y).
May need to plan on keeping the wagon newish though, as even though it's for nowt your mate will won't like maintenance bills.

I've driven a wagon for three seasons now and I think they are massive profit earners, at £100 an hour i think there's £60 profit. If your contractor will be using your machine on other contracts you certainly shouldn't need to pay him anything for your job. Will you be doing one big cut or several smaller ones?

The plan is to do half for first cut, followed by second and third of 40 acres each.

You should easily clear fifty ac/ day in all but the heaviest grass, I think you'd be better off paying your contractor for tractor hire and he pays you for wagon hire. Or even better get him to buy the wagon and do your silage, what other machine gives such a return?
