Round here green fever has really started early, several farms cut last week, mainly Westerwolds/IRG to be ploughed up for maize,i did a 24 acre field for a customer last week,107 dryish heavy bales of real quality grass. This spring is almost a month earlier than last year. With no rain forecast in the next month, surely its best to wait for normal first cuts to bulk up before cutting?

I've a fair bit there but thinking the same as you let it bulk as much until rain forecast because no use planting anything until there's some moisture about

But grass is so well ahead of normal that if we have 2 or 3 weeks of rain many crops will be well beyond good quality. But a 2nd cut will be flying again

In north wales in April you might get odd early cut but often it's then maize put in that field or even late wholecrop

How big shall we make the pit

Debating what to do with 1 small field hre. Had plenty of slurry in 2nd week of February, grass now about 8 inches high. Putting out fertiliser at weekend. No one cuts this early around here so contractor may not be ready. Choice is to ask him to cut etc (probably only 6 to 10 bales in it), or graze it off and fertiliser it in 2 weeks time. :scratchhead:

I have quite a lot of questions. If you are able to answer any of these that would be great. I am based in the UK.

1. When mowing grass fields for silage, firstly at what height and growth stage should this be cut?
2. When mowing grass fields with a tractor what is the step by step method to setting up mowers on a tractor and also where to start when mowing a field, do you go round the outside anti-clockwise a couple of times then up and down?
3. When raking up mown grass fields, how do you set this up on a tractor and what pattern do you drive in the field?
4. When deciding to change the crop grown in a field, would you plough, power harrow and press, then drill? Also what is the step by step method to setting up a plough on a tractor and what method do you follow to the pattern you plough in the field? I've been told you plough in a different direction to the way it was previously?
5. Finally what is the step by step method for servicing a tractor?

Thanks
