SIM tray on Ipad

Rather unwillingly I've bought a refurbished ipad to access emails when I'm away from the PC and am now trying to get to grips with the thing.

How do I get the SIM tray open? I've looked online and am told that I need the special tool or a paperclip. I've tried poking a paperclip down the hole but no joy. How hard do I dare press and should it just pop open?
