I would like to try some spring osr but not sure my fields are level enough yet to drill shallow as only on my second year of dd. What would be the deepest I could get away with?
That's one thing that often confuses me. We "know" that OSR benefits from precise seed placement and doesn't have much energy in supply. Still, with a subsoiler drill you get seed blown out to all kinds of depth and most still reach surface. I think it has more to do with soil penetration resistance, both above and below seed, and not getting too wet around the seedling. Perhaps spring OSR is more sensitive than winter varieties as you want an even stand right from the start.
