Never have enough hurdles and need to buy some new ones. Spoke with a supplier that has sledge type steel ones. Their €55 for 6ft’s compared to €40 for his traditional hurdle, but he says it’s because their a heavier steel. Having had plenty of gates in the past for different suppliers that fell apart, I don’t mind paying abit extra. Anyway, what are people’s experience with these type gates ?

Sound dear enough to me see how heavy they feel against the std ones and see how they couple together I would hope they are pins and the lugs should be set so they won’t lift up and fall apart when you drag them around

I bought a few new 6ft ones from my local Agri store up north here last week and they were around £26 from memory, would need to check the docket for exact price. They come with one pin each. The exchange rate works in your favour @Green farmer to buy from the north at the minute. Yours sound expensive but maybe they are better quality? I am happy enough with the quality of these for the job they are doing. (I’ll add a photo tomorrow if I remember.)They have a curved corner at one side and legs on the other so can be used either way.

we have an alligator, and the hurdles are brilliant. You can pull a whole string around easily, and they fold up concertina style. Being Aluminium they are really light, we fold two at a time and put on the pickup, which means you are loading 12ft of hurdle in one go. 'have a go with some before you rule them out.
I agree. The alligator hurdles are so handy. They are used continually at lambing time to catch sheep and lambs in the big pens. No more running after awkward shearlings.
We even use them for catching poultry!

It's the Alligator I bought... but I think Rappa, Prattley etc hurdles all fold up the same. New design Alligator (copy of Prattley with vertical bars at top) are a big improvement over the old ones.

Either way, they are great hurdles. Like you say, aluminium you can lift 2 or 3 at a time pretty easily. You won't do that with the steel ones though.

I bought some iae hurdles a coupe of years ago 20 odd quid , don't buy them to set up pens the metal is so thin that the lugs tear off the gates if any pressure , used as lambing pens they would work . also have modulamb hurdles which are 60 odd quid and heavier to move around but never broken one yet .

The beauty of Ali hurdles is you can make a funnel to get sheep in and drag 40/50 ft of hurdles around behind them. Transforms the job. Steel would only pull half that although better than ones with legs.
Then as you empty the pen you can easily drag the sides in to make it smaller and stop chasing around after the last few that don’t want to go in.
Start with a few to go across the back of the pen to go with your existing hurdles then buy a few each year.
If you still want steel I believe Fowrass do a steel sledge hurdle that concertina back on themselves. Less likely to pull lugs off as you drag them about.

I bought a batch from GSF Livestock outside Derry a few months back. Very well made and I expect to last a long time. Suited my budget. From memory I think 6ft sledge hurdle was around £30. Would have preferred aluminium but way out of my budget.
