Small bales from big bales

Horsey customers are using small bale hay like its going out of fashion and many cant take four string big bales due to access problems,so I keep trying to think of a quickish way to turn big bales into say three or four sections so I could use a sack truck to move them, plenty of clever people here so lets have your bright ideas

What about pushing some string through a big bale using a rod of metal to make say you divide a d1000 bale into 4 then cut the four original strings dingo 4 small parcels. :scratchhead:
Try it it may work nothing to loose if you push the string threw doubled up you save on the amount of work putting strings trough.

Sell your big uns to the trade and buy smalls , price ton, well there ain't much In it as trade for smalls is dead , a lot went over to big when price went out of control so there is a glut if small bales on the market

Would buy a load of smalls ones if the price is right, dont want welger ones as the horsey set dont get the fact they are bigger so cost more

A friend of mine makes small bales from big bales. He also has a big bale drying facility for the bad years. His set up is almost fully mechanised so there is very little manual handling.
We discussed the 'how wet to how dry' scenario earlier this year; Silage wet to guaranteed hay dry was the answer. The Newmarket yards haven't returned a single bale, as far as I know.

skip to around 10 minutes 30 seconds in, a fair tool, a local contractor has one
Had one on demo a few years ago but the mini bales were very uneven one would be like lead the next like fluff, it was a real shame as it would be the answer if it was a six string bale but 90cm high

That's not happening around here,as less and less people are making the small bales because they can't handle them easily ( they haven't got bale packers ) the demand for the small bales is getting more.

The horsey people around here like the Welger bales because there is so much more in them. They are just on the limit of what they can comfortably lift. When I sell them to merchants they also prefer the heavier bales as they can get an extra 4.1 tonnes on a truck load. It actually makes them cheaper in the end for everyone.

I know what your saying but when your used to paying x amount per bale they dont want to pay extra even tho you tell them its the same price per kg of hay:scratchhead:

The added danger of buying in bales is that you can never be sure ( unless you really know who you're buying of) that they don't contain Ragwort. Supplying bales containing it will be a very quick way of loosing customers ( it'll soon go around ) and is why I never ever buy bales of anyone else as my local reputation is very important to me.

They will argue about the price initially, after all they all want them as cheap as possible, but it is a mistake to think that they don't realise the difference and they soon realise how much longer they last.
