Small direct drill

Hi we are looking for a drill that can be run on a 120 hp tractor, we only have about 70-80 acres to drill each year. Looking to have our own drill rather than a contractor.
Obviously for this acreage we would prefer second hand but don’t mind modifying something in the workshop.
Would an old MF type drill do the job?
Thoughts?

Horsch CO3 Agree! I drill 120 acres with one for last 2yrs with Case 140 hp. 120 would be fine if not too hilly. Drilled oats/barley/beans/cover crops dd. Wheat min till and a test plot of w barley directly after plough to compare with combi. Looks every bit as good as combi at min. We will see when we cut if any difference. Use solos for beans dd (@2in and gen low disturbance duettes for rest. Also sowed graas seed extremely accurately by putting in bigger ram spacers and keeping the duettes off the ground! Extremely versatile and cheap drill.

Would a Ford 6610 be able to pull something like a box 3m Moore Unidrill as we were looking at improving some of our grass leys without ploughing and then spending a week breaking it down and getting it tight enough, the last field we reseeded being a pain as half the field went down nicely the other half stayed like golf balls a bit like it seems to grow well enough but a lot of the clover was lost in that half.

I'm guessing that will likely be out of our budget though looking on the net they look the business and would be a hell of a lot easier to get into one of the field courtesy of UK Power network shifting of a pole but one of the gateways

i know where there is a older but nice 3m freeflow that would convert  take a bit of workshop time tho. would be better if the ground wasnt too steep as well take a bit of pulling up.

Is there grant assistance from the eu/gov for direct drills over there ? That would help you ?

what about a power harrow drill combo?....seen one overseeding on cotswold seeds site?
I have thought about them though dad is not keen on them as he feels they're hard on the tractor not helped by a gardener using one to put a neighbour's lawn in and going too deep too quick, well just too deep. Shame as I've seen some beautiful finishes with them.

Most of our fields are fairly flat though being at the bottom of the North Downs not all of them are.

even a jd 6610 would struggle with a freeflow converted or not.... let alone a ford 6610 im afraid :)

Not a power problem for a small acreage but weight. You can always go down a gear but the ford will not have enough weight to get grip on tough going.

I looked at the grassfarmer range at lamma this year both the Atchison and the simtech very tempted by one. They told me about 30hp per m unless your on hilly ground my only problem is lifting one as I only have an old David Brown. We do 75 acres a year of wheat, spring barley, spring oats and spring beans the beans go in with a contractors 6m Claydon on a case steiger. Currently looking at budgets for a larger tractor and a 3m simtech to see if the savings on time and fuel would be worth the investment.

Hey Oldstyle,
Why not keep the Davy & hitch up to a Duncan.... google Duncan.co.nz !
Then look at the eco seeder drill. It’s a trailed model .2.7 meter twin box. I can sort you out ! Have the range in stock !
