Small scale broiler chicks?

I’m thinking about keeping a few free range broiler chickens, maybe 20 at a time, just for our own use, but I’m struggling to find anyone who will supply chicks or hatching eggs in such small quantities. Does anyone know the best place to get them from or is it a better idea to keep a dual purpose breed (light Sussex?) and grow the cockerels on for meat? Will they put enough meat on to make it worth while? Any advice appreciate!

My view: For the time involved, the costs of keeping them warm and draught-free this time of the year, the hassle involved in sourcing feed and dealing with any predators and veterinary issues, it's only worth proceeding if you consider it a hobby and an enjoyable way to use your time.

If you're doing it to save money, don't bother. You're better off getting your chicken from Waitrose.

Search eBay for hatching eggs.

Take your pick.

I've thought about doing it for the funnies.

Could do a bit of all sorts, pheasant, quail, ducks.
You just gotta be prepared to have a thinning out session now and again...
