Smaller picture file size for emails?

I get charged for attaching pictures to messages - I guess we all do....

I have been sending my mobile pictures by e-mail - on an I-phone7. The e-mail programme I was using would always give me a choice of file-size before sending the pictures - from memory, small, medium (about 100Kb), large or original size. I always picked the medium size files and could send umpteen pictures in a single email - say, of a number of pages or various views of a broken part.

I had to replace the hard drive on the office computer and took the chance to upgrade to Microsoft 365 and also put Outlook onto my I-phone and I-pad. Now Outlook sends the picture files at full size - about 6Mb. This slows down their transmission and if I send multiple pictures then it exceeds the recipient's Inbox limits.

I've reduced the size of the pictures for Messages - in Settings - but that hasn't helped the e-mails.

Can anybody tell me how to reduce the picture sizes, please?

I have as my provider GiffGaff . I've tried to send a photo with a text message and had it refused , no explanation given . It's only recently (this week) that Giffgaff have informed me that MMS messages are not allowed on a "GoodyBag" and that , in order to send them , I have to buy extra credit . So I transferred them to my computer and sent them as an attachment to an email "Up yours Mr. Giffgaff ! "

This is a known issue using the Outlook app on the iPhone.

Like you have said, using the inbuilt email app, it gives you the option to reduce the picture size before sending.

You can also do this in the desktop Outlook, but where it is most important, on a phone, then the option is not currently available.

As said, WhatsApp is a good option for photo sharing.

Thanks Trevor. If it is a known issue it won't be worth pursuing a solution until Microsoft or Apple come up with an upgrade. :(

Is there a "work-around"? Can I send/share pictures with my PC - and then mail them on?

On my personal iPhone, I still use the built in email system.

However, on my works iPhone we have to use the Outlook app as part of Microsoft 365. We have lots of issues with sending pictures at the majority of us are mobile. :)

Think it only going to get worse as cameras get better so pictures will only get larger.

For a PC you can resize photos using the Paint program.

Start Paint, load the photo, resize, 50% say, saveas a new file use JPG for compression.

Some drawing programs and I think Office programs allow you to manipulate the quality of photos. 85% is usually a good compromise between quality and size.

It's not so much about resizing but down sampling the image. Dont go down too far though as the quality will suffer.

Hi, If you've set the message option to low quality, it's probably a pain, but you could send the photo(s) to yourself as a message, then save it. You could then send the lower quality image as an email attachment. Ive just tried it and for the photo I messaged to myself the file size was reduced by a factor of 5.

Regards

Pop them into an Office document, adjust the resolution of the images in it, and send that?

Not familiar with 365 but easiest way in Office 2010 is:

1. put it in a PowerPoint presentation in one go with Insert Tab / Photo Album
2. reduce image size by select one image then Picture Tools Format Tab / Compress Pictures, removing tick for apply only to this picture and pick resolution required.
3. Send with File / Save & Send / Send Using Email

If you don't need them pictures separate and the content editable, you could even send it as a PDF which will drop the resolution

MMS messages with pictures have been at extra cost for as long as I remember. Which is why you should use email or something like WhatsApp. I have used email for years because it is pretty much universal. Haven't used text with a picture attached [mms] in more than a decade. Still use texts of course.
