Snackers

How many sheep do you recon to have per pile? Dad has just bought a swaledale on big wheels because he can't carry bags anymore

Depends how much feed you are putting out... the feed I'm using the heaps (on biggest setting) are only 3lb, so 1lb/hd means 3 ewes per heap. Start feeding tomorrow morning on 1/2lb so it'll be 6 ewes per heap.

We do 1lb per drop, 100 ewes in a field, 100 drops and onto the next one. I don’t think I could be without the counter on the logic
Doing 7-8kmh gives you a distance between drops so 2 ewes can eat end on from each other’s piles.

I know someone who has a snacker for sale that’s only done a few months work if that as they’ve gone out of sheep. He said to me it wasn’t a logic like I had as he knew he only had 1 season left in sheep he bought a cheaper snacker. PM me if you want his number, it’s based near Haverfordwest

Rob Astley trailers if you want the drum type. Excellant.

They are the generic galvanized ones you see on Ebay - Wessex and others sell them too. They are all identical. Quite a small hopper for its rated capacity, neighbour has one - I figured out I couldn't feed my hill ewes in one go with it, would have had to take extra bags on the bike

I was thinking of only doing 25 heaps for 100 ewes

Rob Astley trailers make their own snackers, the ones you see on eBay are polish copies. Rob Astley will can also put a shoot for filling buckets on theirs.

CLH looks like the best of the plastic hopper types. I'm still on filling bags but they are wearing a bit thin with me, especially when I don' take the trailer and bungee them on the racks. You can guarantee one will fall off at the worst possible moment (n):(
