So…… summer

Don’t know about elsewhere but I realised yesterday that we haven’t had a single uncomfortable night sleeping this year. Not one. Those hot muggy nights aren’t nice but there are usually quite a few in a summer. Haven’t even had to get our minimum tog duvet out of (cold) storage. Our two portable air con units have remained in hibernation.

We haven’t had to turn the Aga off at all. There was one day I had a passing thought that if it got warmer then it would soon be time, but nope. Haven’t got the fluorescent fly zapper out either, the plastic swatter has hardly done any business at all.

At the start of the "summer" I was hoping that the previous 9 months of solid rain was about to be turned over but it simply hasn’t happened. We’ve had some dry spells, only dry though, not hot or droughty in any way. I cannot remember a summer like this one for being cold. We’ve had awful spells of incessant rain during summer in the past but they’ve been bookended by hot and dry spells. Not 2024. The awful 9 months has extended seamlessly into an awful 12 months.

Global boiling?

All summer I’ve been waiting for the ‘flip’. Sea surface temperatures around the UK seem to be cooler now. This should promote higher pressures only upset by ex hurricanes being delivered by the jet stream now and again.

There are just signs of things settling going forward and I am still hopeful of an Indian summer. In fact I thing we will now have a prolonged spell of good weather well towards winter. It’s actually quite a while since we’ve had spells of still, frosty, foggy weather through autumn.

I’m just hoping I’m not wrong!:nailbiting:

Also haven't used portable air conditioner. Have summer duvet on but most nights I'm cold.

Can also measure it by the number of days we can't walk the dogs in the afternoon because it's too hot (not that we believe that stuff, but wife is afraid some net curtain-twitcher will report us). Very few of those days this year, and never more than one at a time.

Not been too bad here, got 1st cut hay done by the last day of June but not very many really hot days, I've only opened the skylights three or four nights I think. Two good weeks forecast here now which will be nice . Just hope late September doesn't turn into a six month monsoon like last year.

I keep looking at the UK map and dreaming about being darn sarf. There’s a diagonal line across us as it’s been all "summer" like a ninja sword swishing.

there'll be plenty of wheat planted too early with the fear of that happening and memories of last autumn

For various reasons including the weather we had no wheat and as tiny bit of barley so spent the summer making extra hay and cleaning out weeds so hopefully early drilling will be ok
