Sobering thought for the day

Mot legislation will come soon. Big weights. Fast tractors. Things can't carry on as they are.

Instead of MOTs maybe farmers should be offered one day training courses at Agri colleges on how to properly maintain trailer brakes, including practicals.

It can’t be rocket science.

I would certainly be interested in such an initiative.

That's a really good idea, I would be interested too. Perhaps if we contacted Ag. colleges they could organise something

I’ve just done my livestock transport certificate (finally:whistle:) with the course organised by our county NFU.

Maybe the NFU could put together courses on trailer brake maintenance to show our industry takes this safety issue seriously.

You can do a night school in basic mechanics at pretty much every college in the country. Why would you need an Ag college to start a new course. Besides, how much does it cost to get an Ag mechanic out for a half day? Significantly less than an air ambulance, a mortician and a defence barrister. Get things done properly, and you'll sleep easier at night.

also anyone learning tractor driving should be taught how to use engine braking to slow down surprising how many don't know this, in a panic depress clutch and use footbrake but with 18 ton behind you going downhill aint gonna stop you
I'd always assumed trailer brakes were there to share the burden with the tractor, not do the entire job ?

Anyhoo......I'd rather folks just used lorries than burden the industry with MOT's, licences, and training courses.

I'm sure there must have been accidents years ago with MF 165's / Ford 4000 / 3 ton trailer combinations........but I can't recall any........

Ag. colleges teach things to people, then I can do things properly and sleep at night, not everyone knows everything.

Night schools probably don't have ag trailers. I'll agree the brakes could be the same as other vehicles.

Or if your trailers dodgy just pull into your local tractor shop they’ll go threw the brakes make them like new slap a sticker on it and away you go

However, suitably qualified I would be happier to service the brakes myself than some wet behind the ears,16 year old grease monkey.

Probably end up being charged £50 per hour for the privilege.

I’d rather know the job had been done properly.
