If there's a partnership, say a father and 2 sons or father ,son and daughter, if no discussion re succession (either through stupidity or stubornsess), who succeeds and has their name on the tenancy? Is it the old fashioned primogeniture (ie oldest son or son before daughter)? How is this sort of situation sorted out these days?

It probably depends who is earning from the farm, or who is earning most from the farm.
The tenancy will not be given automatically to anyone. There are various tests you need to pass to succeed, one of them is earnings from the farming business that runs on the tenanted land.
