Are you sure william? Its quite thick and non conductive. Good on batt terminals- less so on multi pin plugs. personally i don't understand your reluctance to use WD 40 I would use that or electric contact cleaner which are alcohol based I think.
Old connectors can lose their shape and get too sloppy for a good connection. You can usually use a screwdriver or pliers or something to bend a bit of spring back into the metal prongs so they are tight on each other again.
I spray them with WD40 then use the airline to blow them clean
Stanley blade to open the spilt pin is a good way to improve connection, but they are so cheap it is often better to put on a new plug and socket for peace of mind
