By the time the weeds have grown that large, the bulk of their work has been done. They have taken up space that the grass would otherwise have colonised (assuming drilling was adequate and the seed rate correct but that's a different thread for another day), and when these annual weeds have finished growing they will leave a vacant space for weed grasses or something more pernicious to take up residence.

Similarly, seedling perennial weeds, if you wiped them out when they were young, do not get a chance to establish, and the chemistry used now is less than half the cost of of subsequent treatments.

True, but that stuff does grow like the clappers. It will likely have motored from small seedlings to that in a week, particularly if it had a shower of rain on it.

Spray it if you want.

You chaps need to be spraying new leys earlier or you are kind of missing the point of it.

@ollie989898 I have a new grass ley here coming along ok, but there's a fair bit of Lambs tongue showing up, alongside a few creeping thistles (just individuals not patches) and dock seedlings. Plus other baddies as well I imagine.

What spray should I run over it with?

I have some straight up 24d in the shed?

Or am about to order some MPCA+ 24D for another job that I could use?

It's only 3ac!

2,4D and MCPA but maximum half rate of each on a new ley. Weeds be small and less harsh on the grass that way.

Another question. Planted our westerwolds etc three weeks ago and it got started well but slowed with this dry weather. Hasn’t slowed the fat hen though! I wouldn’t like to spray now as I think when it rains there’ll be a hell of a flush of general rubbish. In fact I think the fat hen is acting as a bit of a nurse drop at the minute.

When should I spray? Grass is only three inches at best and fairly sparse but I’m sure it’ll come..............I hope.

Polo/Hatchet mix is good from 2 true leaves of the grass onwards. Show me a picture. 2L of polo will probably be ample.
