Thought I would start this thread. Bit of a non event here so far, no wheels turned for 8 days now. How are others getting on? I know it's early yet but forecast is rubbish and in my opinion is that l will lose yield potential after 10th march with spring barley. Meanwhile other jobs are building up.....
You a way through @Lincsman ?

Too wet here. It's all piling up. A lot of ploughing to do, but sometimes find best left till good and dry then drill soon after before the moisture goes.

We used to plough early but found the clay slumped too much in a wet spring and the sand got powdery on top and started blowing, as well as weedy.

Your land sounds like hard work! Two opposite extremes.

Nothing done here yet. Don't normally put barley in for a couple of weeks though. More concerned with the lack of spray and fertiliser days.

Nothing drilled here yet, like @Flat 10 said I always feel yields start to slip after mid March. I'm a bit annoyed with myself because i had a really good spell just after Christmas and could have got drilled up then.

On the plus side everything's had MN,K and N+S (except one wet field) and I'm halfway through putting the muck on beet land.

Ploughing lighter land here, but not concerned about drilling anything yet.
Best yield of s barley I ever had here was drilled well into April on some heavy land that was just too wet to touch before then. Ideal date would be around mid march .
I was told by an old sage, that you should see spring barley twice in the same week. Once putting it into the seed drill and the second time germinated .

Only done my winter barley as above. It was quite dry at points earlier in the year but l prefer not to do any spring barley until mid February just because it can get so cold and the crows murder it. However wish I had pushed harder as from next week I'm sure to be losing yield.

All ploughed up here, some of the brash would go (if I had a combi!) Heavy fields ploughed last Autumn wouldn't. I'd sooner it warmed up before putting any in the ground.

The Barley sitting at peri emergence and watching the crows have it all was worrying me too.

Non to do unless some blackgrass wheat has to be roundup-ed, Still aim to drill everything in the autumn, just as late as we dare as this sea level clay does not do spring crops very well. Its been very wet here this winter and no nitrogen will be going on for at least 2 weeks, many fields have water standing in places.
