Our food system is leaving many farmers in poverty
"The current focus on production and supply
chain ‘efficiency’ that disregards negative and
social environmental impacts is leaving smaller
and more sustainable producers unable to
compete; we are losing the very farmers who
are part of the solution.
Input costs are rising at a rapid rate whilst
prices paid to farmers for their produce are
showing little increase at best, stagnating, or
even decreasing.
A quarter of Britain’s farmers are living in
poverty and pressure on prices means that low
pay, insecurity – such as zero hours contracts
– and dangerous working conditions are
widespread in the industry"
