saw a squirrel this morning and it looked a light shade of red not the red colour you see on the tv or in magazines but definitely not bog standard grey
is this perhaps a throw back or do we have red climbing rats in north somerset now

Have cycles of loads and then few as the pine martins thin them out big time.Of course in days of old gamekeepers would have sorted out the pine martins,but protected now.Go from very dark brown to almost fawn coloured with everything in between.
 
Some of the greys have a rusty red colour mixed in, i have seen a few that really confused me at first glance. Although the ears give it away with the Red Squirrel. These tend to be slighter smaller then the Grey and half the weight. Some Red's can go slightly grey when in a winter coat.

lots of the greys here get a very distinct red colouring at this time of year, true Reds are a much smaller critter and always have the ear tufts, quite a pretty little thing in comparison to the tree rat grey
