Staff car reimbursement

So during the current times staff have been using there own cars to travel to and from contracting jobs . Just wondered what others have been paying there staff per mile ?

standard inland revenue figures are 45ppm.

Fuel costs me half of that.

45 pence/mile seems to be the standard. That's ok now fuel prices have dropped but more thirsty vehicles like 4x4s would struggle when you start thinking about extra insurance and running costs.

0.25ppm after the first 10,000 miles

also i believe that this is tax free.

I am allowed to pay myself 45p a mile tax free from my company , so I would think that would be the figure to aim at

I have 45ppm with current company but have also had tiered depending on car like 65ppm for 4x4 and bigger car engines

One thing that’s a must they should update there car insurance to state they use it for work

As I understand it, if you pay more than 45p then is must be added to wages and tax and NI taken. I assume this is for any sum over 45p, but I am not an accountant.

It’s not his fault what car the staff choose to have privately though. We’ve paid 45ppm much to the disgust of one guy who runs an older petrol RR. His problem not ours.

I tend to charge 45ppm as well as being clocked on.
75ppm if towing.

Fair point & most on a wage/salary will have a vehicle provided, but if they are self employed and have a 4x4 because that's the nature of their work then they are going to be out of pocket.

This, although still tax deductible for the business paying it.

Can pay anything above this, but the employee should be taxed on the excess as additional wages.

There are very few professions where a 4x4 is needed for a work vehicle. And I would say most now 'do not' have company cars. I know plenty who have opted for the cash instead and purchased smaller very fuel efficient little cars. A old school friend of my is one of the accountants in a multinational company and he said about 2 years ago they saw a mass exodus of staff moving from company cars into their own. We are talking about many thousands of people in the UK within the company he works for.

I neglected to think that self employed people would make sure they charged the travelling time better too.
