Staff salary / hourly wage?

We employee three staff on a busy arable farm. They are paid hourly with overtime at time and a half. We run decent modern kit.

I just wondered what is the going hourly rate for experienced and capable staff??

Minimum wage increasing in April again, will this push up the rate of higher rate staff too?

I have a retired guy drive truck fir harvest and during seeding. I can find a body to fill the seat for 20$ but a man worth having and keeping is worth 30$ cash. Feed him as I woukd be and if I go on a road trip to look at equipment in the states he’s invited along and everything paid for.
Id say pay as much as you can afford. A reliable hard grafter with loyalty is hard to replace.

If you have modern and decent kit I'd suggest you probably want to attract the very best people and avoid any grief so higher rather than lower might be cheaper in the long run.

I loathe these sort of threads.

You pay what the business can afford remembering that salary brings additional benefits of pensions, Holiday & sick pay and security of contract (with the caveat of dismissal terms) over and above anyone on an hourly rate.

Anyway, I would suggest that work is far more than just cash alone such as variety of jobs and training plus the odd relaxation such as staff parties &/or trips to shows such as LAMMA

i loathe them as they just act as a reminder just how much more per hour a farm worker earns compared to the risk taker farmer

So do I there’s a load of replies from people who employ no one (including myself) with all kinds of rates but the members who do employ people refuse to comment.
Why’s it a secret?

If it’s any help the last time I asked my brother about it he said he’s on 15 quid an hour flat rate no house no vehicle no phone on a beef/arable/spud farm in Cheshire.

Why’s it a secret?

We employ 5 full time and 5 reliefs
FT are on salaries with OT as necessary plus all the benefits of a salaried employee (like hearing me swear), reliefs are on a fixed payment per milking or £/hrs as agreed for the job(s) to do

There would be an element of location and alternative work opportunities in the equation for any employer

No secret other than neither they nor I would want to discuss their salaries.

Teamwork makes the dream work ...
Also gives those interested in farming a chance to learn while they earn. Not every farm worker coukd handle the everyday stress and give the dedication needed. I can honestly say I’m run off my feet for a big part of the year but love it. Do I have too much. Yes. But I’ve built a good size business to hand down to my kids if they are wanting to farm. It provides me and my family a good living and what I spend also goes into the pockets of others to help keep their families. Without big farms buying new equipment the secondhand market wouldn’t be there for those that want it. One down side is the big farms can take over land be it buy or rent with relative ease when able to spread equipment and labour over a small percentage more.
