Just to be clear, assistant herdsperson, was on 28k, had an hour for his breakfast, hour and a half for his lunch. Started at 5.30 am and finished at 6pm and was on a 12 on 2 off rota and was never asked to work any extra days

Seems a very good wage with reasonable hours to me for an assistant.

10 hours a day after taking off breaks so average 60 hours a week.
3120 hours a year £9ish an hour plus rent and council tax o factor in so well over £10 an hour

It would be difficult to run a farm with staff working 37.5 hours a week!

Maybe I should expect more, but then again all my staff are happy and don't ever leave me

We will average about 45 hours here, work 1 weekend in 3. Extra overtime when needed if they want, both have houses on farm.

Pulled up to a shed about 7.30 one night to pick the milk was a bit surprised to see a young fella still at the shed. Its alright he said I've finished just running late.
He then told me why. it was his weekend off and the boss was away for the weekend, he got woken up at 5 am by the two that were supposed to be milking, right we've quit, leave it with ya and off they went.
Weird thing was it was totally spur of the moment because when the lad got to the shed the cows were in and shed running so they'd actually made a start before deciding to go
He rang his boss to tell him and all the boss said was tough sh*t, i'm not back until Monday.
I've no idea if there was any milk to pick up the following night.

I was quite keen to try an 8:2 8:3 rota here but no one else was that keen.

Still fairly long hours is it not?id only expect someone to work they hours if there was a big job on or maybe if someone was sick but not every day

I have done both 8:2 and 8:3, wasn't that keen on 8:3 due to every day being the same, it might have been ok if weekend was just essential duties

Every other week end off, then 1 mid day week every week. So it's not 5-2, but it's only ever a 10day fortnight

Chatting to our tanker driver this morning after he was moaning about his employer(my milk buyer)
5 on 2 off starts at 6 everyday finishes at 3/4 oclock on 4 days and finishes at 12 on the 5th day.
Takes home approx £500/week.
28 days paid holiday/year.
Time and a half for extra hours.
But in his opinion the job and pay are sh!te !!!!
He could earn more for less hours with an agency he said.
Thats what we are up against people.
The days of paid staff working flat out 10 hrs a day 6/7 days a week are quickly disappearing over the hill.
Roll on the robotic revolution, maybe mr Gove is right !!!!

Also worth noting, on there weekend on, it's minimum work. This am, I've trimmed a foot, moved the store cattle and now off to a sale, yards empty till half 2.

I end up with no assistant a lot of the time and also end up helping with beef and other stuff

I might get down to 50 hours in summer

To be fair it pretty much the same during the week to, I'll happily send people home for the day if it's raining and there's nothing much on.
