Standen potato harvester star separation

I’m replacing the 14 finger star wheels on the shaft there’s a 16mm spacer in between every one that needs changed also do you have to put these in? Would it work without them? Or can I use nylon spacers in each 1 as the original ones are expensive.

You'll get less cleaning without the spacers.
