One on Ebay, showmans, on at £110k but gossip has it that it was a roller and has been converted and needs circa 30k spending on it. A chap I match plough with is a Steam bod and knows all about them and told me the story but none the less it certainly looks the part at a a darn sight cheaper than a Burrell !!!

Some shows pay a bit to help with haulage and most give you some coal once you are there. It does not come anywhere remotely near to what it costs to shift stuff about nowadays. If anyone thinks they will do anything other than dip their hand in their pocket by owning a steamer think again! But then people haul tractors and commercials about too and some get sniffy that the steamers get a bit and they don't. I have had engines for 50 years and just for the love of them, working on them and using them for the intended purpose. The rallying side of things can be fun in small doses, I reckon attending one every 5 years is plenty!
If your mate is thinking about buying one the most important bit of advice is to get someone who knows the job to go with him if he doesn't. If he does then good luck, the hunt is the enjoyable bit!

There is something about steam that is so nice to see working. I have grown up with a neighbour who has a ploughing engine, and also runs a workshop doing boilers on steamers. There will be some around for sale, but what is your friend looking for? Ploughing, showman, roller, steam tractor? Or look around at the rallys?

Get yourself known to the local boiler inspectors. They have an excellent knowledge and know the engines literally inside and out!

Buying one with not much thickness left on the boiler can result in an expensive bill in a couple of years time.

Yes, some shows pay an appearance fee and then coal, other may just be coal.

There are a good bunch of guys on here who can offer some excellent advice and may be able to help better.
