Storing Fence Wire

Got a lot of fencing and hedge maintenance planned for this winter. Basically going to pull up all the fencing wire and they reput it out in the spring when needed.

Do any TFFs have any bright how to store it? Is it possible to buy/make a big reel?

I currently have 6 geared reels that I use now but theres a lot more out there that can fit on them and I don't want to buy anymore knowing they aren't going to be used.

Cheers

Do you mean plastic electric fence wire?
We get empty reels off the mig welder to gather them up for winter. A friend lathed out a centre to suit them and attach onto the battery drill. Think they hold about 400/450m.

I've just eyed up a bale wrap pole. With the top and bottom of a 50gal drum and some threaded bar I could end up with a big reel...

Big mess if it goes wrong! If you look at the way the Rappa system works it winds wire in evenly. I'd be wary of making it too big if doing it by hand as you could end up with it tangling up and that will involve a lot of cursing and swearing. Electric fencing is great when it goes well but a real pain when it goes wrong. I remember one winter when sheep on turnips got out over fence and one lamb had got his leg caught around wire, ran all over the place pulling fence posts out and must have ran around an old hayrack about 20 times before finally running out of wire and stopped. It took a very long time to untangle and put fence back. I probably would have been better to put the whole lot in the bin and buy new for the time it took!

Voss sell a simple reel that will receive a plastic coupling that will engage in it and clamp in the chuck of a cordless drill , simple spare plastic 'repeater'reels are availiable and slide on and of thd main bit .
They claim each to hold a 1k metres but they dont quite hold that .
Winding up with a cordless is way easier that by hand even with thos e expensive geared reels.

Edit. Looks like they sell an even bigger ones now , claiming they. will hold up to 2000m's on each reel
