Strange trailer axle!!!

last night I helped out carrying bales and the boss who was using a borrowed trailer was complaining that the brakes were dragging.. the left side hub was quite warm but when I looked at brake on inside I was surprised to see there was no backplate on both sides and the brake shoes and components were exposed to the elements

Yes.... I should have said no cover

cover not necessary most hgv trailers they fall or rot off no issue

We had a trailer fail for one missing last month

I have looked at axle again.... there is no backplate!!!

Seen some American spec’ LGV trucks and trailers that don’t have backplate from new.

was not missing it was bad with rust & it fail its test & that was one thing that need to be put right.

They will only fail the test if damaged, worn, corroded or unsecure. If it’s not there they can’t fail the test on it. Exactly same as cars etc.
