Just been reading the thread about an environmental forum. It got me wondering whether this thread would be better in Fitness and Weight loss. It may pick up a few more cyclists:) and get some more chat going

I was just wondering @Boysground, can you get out of your place on a bike without dealing with the horrors of the A36? Any direct access to H or U/L?

If I don’t want a puncture I can’t. Usually go to H and head into the lanes or turn right and go up on the plain. Did have a training ride with the guys I am doing aRide London with last week. Started and finished in the Leo which is liable to get messy :)

What bikes do you guys have? Any reccomendations?

I'm doing about 120 miles a week for the past 8 weeks on an old 12 year old Trek 1000 which is 8 speed and been fine but I'm thinking of an upgrade now something a bit better.

Probably willing to spend up to £1500 - I think I'm sort of looking in CAAD12/ Giant Advanced/ Cube Attain type territory. I quite fancy carbon but doesn't have to be, at least Shimano 105 and not so fussed on disc brakes but I will winter cycle a bit but not as much as summer. I'm not the type to absolutely baby a bike either so nothing too prissy.

Depends what you want to do. For easy trails and a bit of road work I would go for a Cyclo cross or gravel bike. If you like a bit more upright riding position and a more trail bias I would look at something like a 29er hard tail. Wouldn't be without discs they're just so much better when you need them.

I have a Planet X pro carbon with SRAM Rival groupset. A friend of mine had one for a few years and did London Paris on it so a good review for me as a first proper bike. Also cheap if I didn’t get on with cycling.

Now i see a lot of cannondale synapse and specialized when I am out both are great value for money. The latest version of 105 is really good and there are plenty of reviews saying it is as good as older Ultegra. Most people would say go for 28mm tyres these days or even bigger.

I am saving for a Trek Domane it should be more comfortable on the road and the standard wheels have the tubeless option.

It's a bit of a minefield, last Autumn looking for new road bike that would be good all rounder and maybe a bit more comfortable than a low racing type set up. Also be aware that a lot of manufacturers go cheap on wheelsets as it's easy to hide in what is otherwise a good spec. Having had quite a few Specialized in the past ended up with Roubaix Elite, thinking that spending just enough not to want to upgrade anything in the future would be the most cost effective way! Slightly more upright stance then many but still a quick bike and has suspension in the head tube it really soaks up the bumps making the most comfortable road bike I've ever ridden. Best deals are in Autumn when next years are on the horizon and also Evans have a good deal when you px any old bike which goes for recycling, so rrp £2.5k bought for £2k. Plenty of good bikes out there from main manufacturers and will be worth more if you sell again, tend not to sell mine though still have my Raleigh Record Sprint from 1985 that I used to ride to school on, rode Eroica on it last year.

I have 3 bikes full suspension mountain bike Carbon road bike and an Ali CX bike, I tend to pick the CX if I go out, bought as a winter bike as I had a couple of bad offs on the roadie on wet greasy roads but tend to ride it all year.

My current bike is 20mm tyres and old style Sora so I really am ready for a change now. Would be quite happy with 105 to be honest.

Your right there are loads of good bikes out there.

I have just changed from the Hutchinson tyres my bike came with to continentals. It’s surprising how much that has improved the ride. All 25mm as I can’t fit wider.

This is probably the current equivalent to mine, gets ridden all winter and as said earlier is my go to bike, can do serious off road work and apart from shearing the rear mech off on new years day has been bomb proof after 2 years and 3 winters just had a new groupset fitted gone to the new generation 105 which is fantastic.
