What do you think the price will be for next year. Following at 48% increase for this harvest how big a drop are we expecting.

Until there are some high yielding virus yellows resistant varieties the price has got to remain £40/T at least. Theres also Cercospora, beet moth, frost etc to worry about.

All valid points and I completely agree…but remember who we are dealing with. The price will be set at a level the farmer will moan about; but still grow and not a penny more and in the absence of other competitive spring crops world market price is irrelevant. I sincerely hope I’m wrong but I’d be very surprised if it started with a 4

There will be very little grown on heavy land unless it starts with a 4

I think the base price will imo certainly start with a 3; having said that I bet there may be a variety of options to enhance that as like you say the world price will be providing a ‘cushion’ to make such offers to ‘sweeten the deal’ but whether these will entail a multi-year agreement to put in place…who knows.

Anyone even contemplating a new multi year deal need a slap, it was the multi year deal last time that completely undermined the price last time around.

As for 24 price I'm putting money on mid 30s with a whole host of sweeteners early lift bonus, yield guarantees, yv, frost, month, ect insurances.

I think this year's 40 quid job was just a carrot to keep us strung along before bending us over again for a few years again.

My tuppence worth is as follows:

World sugar prices are higher than last year, currently around £57/tonne so I cannot see many of our rivals happily selling beet/cane to BS any cheaper.
BS have always stated that there are quite happy for farmers to benefit from higher world sugar prices.
If they set the price to low every Tom, Dick and Harry will be trying to get onto the world market pricing scheme for 25% @ £57 on day one if prices don't change significantly.
British Sugar have run out of beet I believe having to source elsewhere, yes there is more in the ground this year and in my patch of Lincs a lot of this years is poor, including some of my own. How well they turn out is anyone's guess currently, the weather for the next month is critical going forward.

Fertiliser costs for next year may be lower but until any contract is out, no one can lock into any prices until any contract is issued.( unless you are gambling again) Hand on heart can anyone say where prices are going to be in two/six months time in such a volatile world at present.
Alternative land uses: combinable crops are currently lower, but are many selling at these prices how many have got some sold forward at a lot higher pricing. Again another two months time the pricing could be off the charts either way who knows.
With the poor spring this year, I am finding larger vegetable growers looking for the best land next year which then leaves the poorer quality of land which often yields lower resulting in higher costs.

But who knows price it too less and after frosts etc less year, many might still turn their backs on the crop.

Suppose it depends what the Louth MPs husband thinks he can get away with - try it on. Maybe ask the Conservative Party their policy on food prices!!! Seem to recall ast week when Sushi was waffling about capping food prices Sugar was included as a staple.
