Suitable Hymns for a no-tiller's funeral

I'm not being morbid or anything, just my attention wondered a bit during the sermon at Evensong tonight and I wondered what hymns I'd want at my funeral. 'We Plough the fields and scatter' is obviously out although it seems to crop up at most farmer funerals. I quite like 'Come ye thankful people come, raise the song of harvest home', it's got a nice bit about companion cropping in the second verse ('wheat and tares therein are grown') although come the third verse it sounds like they've got the sprayer out ('from thy field wilt purge away all that doth offend, that day') and then they go and cast the poor old tares in the fire which seems a bit of a waste.

Any thoughts...?

Come, ye thankful people, come,
Raise the song of harvest home!
All is safely gathered in,
Ere the winter storms begin;
God, our Maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied;
Come to God's own temple, come;
Raise the song of harvest home!

It has been sung at every farm funeral that I have been to.

My wife is determined to be cremated and then put in a firework and sent up to explode, just working out where the farm is a bit low on potash, may need to get a low blow rocket so she doesn't blow onto neighbours ground:greedy:(y)

You could be real tight and take the bangers of the rope bangers and tape them to a twig and call them rockets she will never know and then a bit of ashes in each one and put on the low k spots around the farm she will cover a bigger area with a bit of k and you wont lose her on the wind ;)(y)

Sounds like a plan

Maybe not for a funeral but a quick google reveals this hymn sung to the tune of Abide with me, first verse very apt for the last 12 months!

Sowing with tears, preparing for the crop,
Waiting in prayer, afraid to even hope,
Watching for rain and warmth in measure due;
God of all life and growth we trust in you.

Half of our world sees food in short supply;
Mothers go hungry, children waste and die;
War, flood and drought consume and kill the seed;
God of compassion, help us meet their need.

Rich lands replete, with barns that overflow,
Food to be squandered, farm-gate prices low;
Plans, dreams and hopes with farming incomes fall;
God of abundance, help us share with all.

Hear now our prayers at this Rogationtide;
Bless those whose work maintains our countryside;
Those now despairing in your safety keep
That all who sow with tears, with joy may reap.

only a week since my fathers funeral, a rural chap all his life more gardening than farming but still we wanted a rural theme.

yes we did have We Plough The Fields as the first hymn, but second one was One More Step, this sounds quiet up beat for a funeral but my father was this sort of person always jolly. also my sons chose it.

Nice thing to do is plan your own funeral, with my devious nature i am going to think up a real cracker for mine!
I was lucky enough to have some good chats with dad in his last days and it helped no end since he has gone.

psalm 23 (sung):

the lord is my shephard i shall not want

(no tillers are lost members of the flock!)

he makes me lie down in green green pastures

(stop growing annual crops for intensive stock feed sit back and let them graze pedders mix)

Sorry to hear that Stoxs. It's a grim business burying your father. I must admit to rather liking 'One more step', they'll be singing it in the village school leavers service in Church tomorrow, where my son is one of the leavers. Unfortunately, I'll be at Lords. I think he understands (he wanted to know if I could get him in to the cricket as well)

DEFRA would probably expect you to weigh your good lady first, so as not exceed RB209 guidelines. I wonder if you can get variable rate rockets ?

You did him proud! A real village character who is truly missed. I wouldn't worry about your funeral for a few dozen years though!
