Suitable replacement engine,mf35 4 cylinder

Anyone any advice good or bad,one to look for or ones to avoid,
4 cylinder 35 with engine trouble,lad that owns it has got a few quotes to rebuild it and its crazy money and still might not be a success, his next idea is to graft an engine from something else into it as a winter project,he doesn't need this tractor for work,(perhaps a working day for a bit if fun)tractor has been family for generations so getting rid is not an option.. Anyone any advice,preferably something with not a crazy amount of work to it because I know I'll b getting roped into this too... Thanks all.....

Surely it will cost near as much to fanny about grafting something else into the front of it, as it will to do up the 4cyl and keep it original????
He has been quoted roughly the same by two different well respected crowds to rebuild the engine and both have told him it might not be a success,they even said that from new the 4 cylinder was a temperamental engine and didn't advise spending money on it.he's not bothered about keeping it original,just wants somthing that will start wen he wants it..

Be interested to hear other people's inputs on this as well, friend has a mf 20c industrial model with 3 cylinder perkins that has been rebuilt several times ,he would like to replace the original engine with something a bit more robust preferably a diesel 4 cylinder. Is there anything out there that would mate to the front end without to much modification? Bell housing wouldn't be to complicated as you can make adapter plate fairly easy

For your friends engine needing to be rebuilt several times suggests either it was not done properly or not serviced at regular intervals
The engine in the tractor would be the Perkins A3 152 which is one of the best engines ever made and I would say that 2 or 3 at the very most complete overhauls would be enough in life time of tractor

Err, it wasn't made to be turbocharged :cool::oops: not going to argue I believe it was a good engine, this one has had a rather hard life

Confused now ............

A3.152 the A3 would suggest we're talking about a 3 cylinder Perkins?
All the important stuff (starter) is an the wrong side to fit it into a 4 cylinder bell housing.

A few lads put Nissan Patrol engines in for the road runs, but better keep it simple?

if done properly arebuild is as good as new that engine is a good reliable lump just a twit to start in the cold the thing has lasted sixty years , some folk mill out the combustion chambers and recon that helps starting but i dont know about that a really good battery helps we had one in the winter of sixty two always got it going use to take the air intake off and hold a flame to it while cranking

A 4.203 from a 65 or a 6.305 ( likely hard to find from an Allis Gleaner combine) should also fit.The front cradle may need modified,as will the steering and radius rods,bonnet and fuel tank for fitting the last two though.

yes easy conversion , you will need about 8 -10 of those weld on gate hangers to pack the front axle (cradle ) out (about a 10mm lump of metal with hole in middle ) to make track rods etc fit , the only issue is you will need another tank because the 4cly wont fit on top of engine not sure if 3 cyl one will , we had a new square one about 2in deep made up by local welder ,fan is about 3-4 ins from rad but hasnt caused any issues , may be different if working hard , other than that every thing just went together like a dream (will need a few fuel pipes made up etc , when i get back i will just have a quick look see if we did anythng else . been with us being used for over 30 years

edit : ours was a new perkins marine diesel 3cyl , dont think it made any difference , ( engine was on a pallet next to the tractor in bits when we bought it )
