What, worse than just grass??Don't do that with fresh cows or it will be ping ping ping. How did your butter fats hold when you started zero grazing.

That sounds like a sales pitch from an NIS rep.I'm on sugar beet at the moment but I will switch back to hulls in the summer on price. They all have a place as a source of ndf.I buy on the cost of the energy they supply beet is always first choice when competitiveYes tried 50\50. I think if it's fibre your after NIS is just the job. . Will be some soya hulls and sugar beet in my blend.
Tell me if I'm wrong but soya hulls is the shell of a seed pod designed to pass through undigested to protect a seed. Straw is a forage and by it's nature was intended to be digested??
Good question I guess you need professional advice, maize and grass is what I feed to my stale cows last year. I would not be brave enough to feed it to my fresh cows on its own but they are big Holsteins and need filling upWhat, worse than just grass??

The ME is no better than grazed grass, and the protein is too high, unless your grass is low in protein. It would be dry feed though. We have been offered a summer blend of
wheat distillers 31%
Sugar Beet Super Flow 32%
Soya Hulls 32%
Plus min and mal
11.9 me 15.47 protien
Offer in 10 tonne drop £168, paid DD. How does this sound?
Far too high protein. If they are have grass which is always over 20% protein, you only need a 14% cake. That's all we feed from March till octoberGetting prices for summer blend at the moment looking at 60% soya hulls or sugar beet pellets which ever is cheapest 30% soya and 10% rape seed meal
Blend works out at around 25% protein probably feed at a rate of 1-2kgs a head depending on grass growth and time of year they will also get 2.5kgs of rolled wheat and fed to yield in parlour on a 18% protein 13me HDf cake max 6-8kg depending how generous I'm feeling
Prices are for 15t tipped April £190 June £185 August £178

I would agree if they were just getting grass, but we buffer feed fairly well to make sure we don't run out of grazed grass, to keep good rumen fill on the fresh calvers most should hit 45lts+ and to try and keep the bf and pro up.Far too high protein.
