If your ground is not too stoney or shallow have a look at a weaving sub disc.
Our ground is quite stoney. Need something relatively heavy to cope with them, there's some big old flints and some places where there used to be hedges so it's more stone than soil... Subdisc not be any good for us in that case? Also how do they cope with clay? We have a ridge of clay running through two fields and there's clay across the whole farm.

Other thing is the drill. We've got a sulky master 3 on Suffolk coulters, seems to clog up fairly easily with vegetation and that sort of thing, especially the harrows. I'm guessing if we go for the min till stuff we will need to get a disc drill as well?

traild trio told by deaaler fetch it try it, never thought we would pull it, we have every thing from running sand to brickyard clay often in the same field. it does agood job on all, but has to be dry on top to get traction , its only on a arion 630 , 8_9k.

3m trailed trio? The dealer that sold us the tractor sells sumo which is why they were what I thought of to start with, good dealership and that counts for a lot. What depth are you running yours at?

Well we don't want to go deep, only going in the top 4-6 inches. Think a 2.5 might be the way to go then so long as its not going to be too small when we eventually get a bigger tractor
They take some lifting as well as pulling, also remember a 2.5m sumo is wider than most 5f ploughs so you’ll be covering more ground, and they rely on a constant speed to do the job, you want to maintain it uphill and down dale.

What sort of speed do you need to do a good job?

My neighbour uses a 3 m Lemken Karat If conditiions are right he'll susoil the tramlines, then a pass with the Lemken after harvest, followed by another pass post Glyphosate pre drilling. Drill is a Lemken Solitaire power harrow drill combination.

Harvest 2019 & 2020 were exceptionally dry, so soil stubble mixing was more difficult, but with a wet summer this year there's almost a tilth on the rape stubbles after one pass, ready for sowing.

Don't ask me what HP his NH is since I'm a dinosaur who remembers when a 7000 was a big tractor.

Photos are 2017 - second pass

Hows this for a bit left field, forget the sumo( power hungry monstrosities that they are) try and find a horsch co/sprinter + a low disturbance subsoiler if you must, and there you go, bish bash bosh, mintill/ notill the choice is your.
There is no way in hell that the maxxum will lift never mind pull a sumo, leading you into buying a larger tractor, cost cost cost, the maxxum how ever will play with a co/sprinter on metcalfes and pull a 4 leg LD subsoiler.
Like I said maybe a bit left field.

Hello, we have a maxxum 125, and we want to get into doing more of the minimum till stuff, so that we dont need to plough. We would like to have something like a 3M sumo trio, but i dont think the tractor would pull it? What sort of power do the sumos need through clay and through sand? i know they do a 2.5M one but I think if we are going to do it at all we would want to do it properly and go for the 3M one. My guess is that we would have to wait till the trade in for the maxxum and go up to a puma for the extra weight and power. Thoughts?

Maxxum 125 on a 3m Sumo is a BIG, some might say ridiculous, ask particularly if you have any banks or hills. Its the lifting and handling of it that is the biggest issue.
Running 2.5m Sumo here behind a JD6170R. Wouldn't want a 3m one on our banks.
Can do 60 acres a day with the 2.5m machine so not an issue for me. I have the 5 leg version. Our JD6630 wouldn't handle the 2.5m Sumo on much of our ground.

We have quite stoney and shallow ground it copes very well as for clay I hate it but if done in decent weather shouldn't be a problem get one on demo.

2.5m Trio on 165hp here. 1tonne on the front is about right, could do with wheel weights really. It goes well on the sand but I could do with 50 hp more on the clay. 8k is fast enough otherwise you start to boil the soil/spread the blackgrass through the profile. Metcalfe NG legs help. Worse thing you can do with a trio is reach for the draft control.
