All joking apart, it's good to see nobody missing the absurdity of her appointment from its start.

I've no reason to think she is anything other than a good and decent woman, at a personal level, but she was manifestly unsuitable for the position and this should have been obvious to 'those in power' before she was given the job.

Her appointment was absolute proof the 'system' of such things doesn't work; we've seen this, in ag' and elsewhere again and again, and we have to put up with it. Why?

There are many possible answers, but two that come straight to mind are:

1) We don't and can't have properly accountable politicians, actually representing us in agriculture, under our current electoral system. We need PR... under PR, if we had a 'Country Party', it would almost certainly gain enough votes to give it the equivalent of 40 to 50 seats in the Commons, maybe many more - that would usually see it holding the balance of power... think on that.

2) In the absence of truly accountable elected representatives, we have no competent industry representing body to forcibly and effectively make the case that we need the people directly controlling agriculture to actually have experience in and to understand, you know... agriculture.

That's the reality chaps, without either or - ideally - both of these we can't expect change. (y)
