'Surge' in illegal bird of prey killings since lockdown

I just don't get some people's obsession with Grouse shooting, like there's other ways to get your jollies off other then shoot, poison or otherwise kill endangered birds of prey just because they eat a few Grouse chicks that you can't then just shoot after a while anyways.

Just baffles me tbh.

Slightly off topic but Knew a lad a while back absolutely everything that moved had to be shot! Was having a cup of coffee In the garden when he rushed off to get his shotgun complaining that a bird had been chirping all morning and annoyed him. It was a woodpecker needless to say I wouldn’t let him. The only thing he nurtured were the pheasants he coaxed from neighbours shoot obviously until he then shot them. I have nothing at all against field sports and enjoy shooting myself but some people just get a buzz from killing anything and should not be associated with the sport in any way gives us all a bad name

How the hell does he have a gun license? Like how can you even look at a woodpecker and go "yeah that thing needs to die"

I agree with pest control, I just don't agree with needless cruelty, even to foxes, pigeons,, badgers etc, if you're going to kill them, do it instantly imo

The original report does come couched in very emotive language, from an organization that will not be happy until no sporting shooting is allowed. All packaged up and reported by an anti-fieldsport leaning BBC with an anti-shooting spin.
Of course Raptors should not be killed illegally, but perhaps the time is coming that ground nesting birds and hares ought to be protected from a proliferation of totally protected buzzards and kites, that have in some areas achieved vermin proportions.

Me thinks the issue is more about the way RSPB are lobbying and making mischief . During Covid how do you know where the truth lies?

I think the inference that they are hoping the public will make is that gamekeepers have been filling their boots during lockdown.
But I agree there are more people about than ever.

Interesting that the article suggests "fewer people out in the countryside who might report cases, with walkers and specialist raptor groups under lockdown. "

Never seen as many walkers as I have over the last 6-8 weeks, and most people I talk to have said the same...

Its like hyde park corner for people and cyclists round here since lockdown

many shoots not operating and furloughed game keepers

plenty of raptors round here more than ever before
leverates have no chance unless there is a lot of cover
even seen a buzzard catch a rat

most shoots just put a few extra poults down to cover losses

Well. The keepers here have been going overdrive controlling 'vermin' since lockdown.

I'll leave it to you to decide what they class as vermin, but all I'll say is they've been in court for it before.
