Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy scepticism.

I don't mind people knowing my soil carbon and I don't mind getting advice on how to improve it, which is some of what elms or the SFI seem to be about.

At the end of the day it's still my farm. If some practices are outlawed in the interests of the environment, I'm happy to go along with it

The 'science' and Defra are both continually changing stories..
What if the practices which are outlawed are actually counter-productive and reduce your income?

And wouldn't you find it a little irksome to know that a neighbour who had never shown any regard to the environment was being paid handsomely due to having 'degraded' their soils?

I fully expect that to happen. I don't farm by copying what's happening over the hedge.

I'm not sure it's got anything to do with copying anyone else. It's about trying to balance our circumstances with regard caring for our farm and remaining 'in business'.
If Defra decide on some stupid rules limiting stocking of high SOC soils to 'protect' them, it would be detrimental in every way. I'm quite astounded that you can be so relaxed about such a possibility.

High SOC soils produce bumper yields.. fact... but how do we get there without going bust in the meantime as it can take 20yrs to restore SOC and SOM🤔

What I meant was, my neighbour depleting his soil or otherwise, does not influence my farming policy. As I said, I fully expect to be rewarded less by the taxpayer for not having depleted my soils.

I only really have two main aims with my farm, make a living and improve my soil, the idea being that both these aims help one another.

There are easier ways to make a living. If it was all about the money I wouldn't be doing it.

I'd say that whether we admit it or not most farmers ultimate aim is to leave their farm in a better state than when they first got it whatever our idiotic governments do, if that's not a good thing I don't know what is.;)

This is where human rights get you.

When I saw some replies in the Carbon Credits thread and the fact some farmers are going down this route along with the actions they have taken.

Pretty obvious Carbon Credits is about making Straw more expensive and increasing the costs of livestock farmers. The other actions being taken are directly reducing the number of people employed in agriculture. Also reducing the number of skills in the industry. Reducing outlay on the farm. Reducing productivity. This will lead to a net reduction in farming GDP figures.

Carbon Credits is about Globalist Corporations destroying agriculture in a cheap efficient manner. Not just the produce but also the jobs, wages and culture. Looks to me as though the margins concerned are not covering the return you can make from Straw sales - UNLESS you count the cost of machinery and jobs.

I asked some other farmers what they thought about the situation. They stated immediatly that the people concerned are selfish stating the comments about failing to employ people. Some people are easily swayed for pennies.

Also the pretense that Carbon for straw isn't recycled back into soil is childish and obviously wrong.

All the current policy is about destroying livestock in the UK and unfortunately some people are making money out of it.

Does anyone really believe DEFRA anymore? If you read this Gov.uk spin provided to farmers weekly the real question you have to ask is where have they spent the BPS reductions as there doesn't seem to be much of it left in the Pot for new schemes... Creative accounting at its best DEFRA..

  • increased payment rates for CS revenue options to better reflect the change in costs since the scheme opened in 2015 – on average payment rates increased by 30% for most options
WHY Does DEFRA keep these lies going... its about 8% for CS options on average
