Swallows 2022

I'm sure that hummingbird hawkmoths come across the channel. I don't think that the elephant ones do. I might be wrong though.
You could well be right, I wasn't doubting you.
It's some years ago but I was very surprised to learn Painted Lady butterflies came here from Spain, that is a fair old way for something that rarely seems to be heading in any particular direction.
I was in Australia just before covid and there were thousands and thousands of butterflies all heading the same direction. So many even the roads were white and yellow with them from car strikes.
Quite spectacular really but nobody seemed to notice or care.

Only spotted them here a week or so ago..... 2nd cut was done behind Mother's place and that evening they were busy swooping low...

Loads yesterday afternoon about... Swallows and Swifts

Plenty of swallows here, flying ants are out in force today, I hope they are on the swallows menu

Have hundreds of them, at least 10 nests on our newly painted farmhouse 🙄.

Loads here, must have been over 40 on the telephone lines this morning at 6am, good year for them same as English Partridge, never seen so many young broods, very pleasing!

Hmmmm.... Am I right in thinking that swallows-wise this year there is a north-south divide? Seems people central England upwards and northern Ireland have plenty

Neighbouring farms round here also much leaner :(

ps grazing now short as I can remember - early morns now mist so the dew is causing a tinge of green but bu**er-all growth since haymaking really - and bale count is 25% down on last year....

we cut our hay late, mid July, not much rain since and like yourself it’s only the dew that is giving any moisture
Still have swallows performing low flying acrobatics especially in the evenings
We have rain forecast for next week… here’s hoping

This is what the house is like all summer, and that's only a snap shot.
