For some reason the cuckoo always turns up really early at Emsworthy which is in the valley between Haytor & Hound Tor where all the bluebells grow.
Numbers on Bodmin Moor seem fairly constant, I see them regularly in the course of my day job.I live off the moor with the valley wet willow woodland its here that numbers seem to have dipped that's why it's noteworthy hearing one this morning.

Haven't seen any on this farm yet . They had a good breeding season last year, do hope they haven't fallen prey to the continental mist netters. To me they're a step in the season , that I really look forward to , like the coming of the snowdrops and the daffodils , time yet I suppose but they're leaving it a bit late !

The first arrivals at the end of april moved on but another bigger contingent have returned over this weekend and seem to be settling in, hope they stay and breed well plus the sparrow numbers seem to be growing and got a pair of blackbirds in the garden , displacing the predators would be more useful than increasing bird strips etc imo

Had a rare sunny day here yesterday and was able to sit and watch pairs of swallows swooping into my shed. Hope they intend to nest but they will have to put up with the noisy sparrows who have already moved in.

We have fewer swallows this year after a really good breeding season last year so our cadre must have had a bad journey or winter. Haven't heard the cuckoo here, and swifts few and far between.
